The Hawaiian shield volcano K?lauea erupted on May 3rd. The eruption was accompanied by a 6.9 level earthquake one day later and several smaller quakes.

Since then, over 1700 people have been forced to leave their homes. On Sunday, they were authorized to return briefly to their homes to get some important belongings such as medicines and pets. On Monday morning, all residents were urged to leave as new lava streams are coming. An emergency alert has been issued. The air is dangerous due to huge amounts of sulfur dioxide. Thus far, at least 26 homes have been destroyed by the lava streams.
