The number of Canadians travelling to the United States continued to drop in 2017, even though the Canadian dollar has strengthened, the Vancouver Sun reported today. The number of Canadians travelling to the US declined between 2013 and 2016 when the value of the Canadian dollar declined making trips more expensive for Canadians, but this year the value of the Canadian dollar has been going up,however travelling continues to decline.

Thirty one percent of Canadians polled recently by a Vancouver research company, expressed concern about travelling to the United States. The Sun speculated, based on a poll by Facebook, that the reason for the continued decline in travel may be due to Canadians’ fear of recent mass shootings in the United States such as Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting and 2017 Las Vegas shooting, a reaction to the growing Islamophobia in the United States, or possibly reports of social media intrusion by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency may be behind the decline in travel.

In 2013 Canadians made forty eight million trips to the United States. By the end of fiscal 2017 the number will drop to thirty four million trips.
