My Office Is My Second Home

The average person spends 8 hours a day in the office, with the average commute taking 1 hours, that equates to 9 hours devoted to work. When you consider that we spend and average of 7 hours sleeping; that leaves an average of just 7 hours that most people have at home. If they’re lucky. With this in mind it seems only fair that employers make life at work as comfortable as possible without disrupting productivity. Through a series of small measures, offices can be turned into a much more relaxing and comfortable place. A place which workers do not dread going into, but instead see as a home from home.
The first thing that springs to mind when thinking of home is a good old fashioned cup of tea. After the long commute that many workers make, it stands to reason that they may want a refreshing cup of tea or a coffee as a pick me up. Ensuring that these things are always available is a great way to give workers a good start to their day. I’m sure they’ll also appreciate the savings they’ll make by no longer having to stop at the local coffee shop before work. Throw In a nice pack of chocolate biscuites and you will have an excellent team in no time. Comfort is also essential if workers are expected to spend more of their awake hours at work than at home. Now, no-one is suggesting that workers should be allowed to work from armchairs and bean bags – that would just be silly. However a small respite area with a cushion or two where workers can relax, eat their lunch or read over some paperwork will surely be invaluable for productivity. Whilst there’s not much you can do with the appearance of a standard office, you can still take some steps to make it not look so office-like. A perfect example of this is the introduction of a few, easy to maintain plants. This will add colour and little vibrancy to the office, and will no doubt make workers feel a little more homely and relaxed. In offices or departments that rarely deal with customers face for face or over the phone, the general background hum can be very off putting. The sound of fax machines, scanners photocopiers and typing do nothing but remind people that they are at work. Drown out these depressing drones with a simple but effective radio. Music playing at a low volume has been known to boost the moods of office workers and allows time to fly by much quicker.
